The beautiful caribbean island of Roatan, the largest of the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras, is surrounded by the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea (second largest worldwide after Australia's Great Barrier Reef) and offers some of the world's best SCUBA diving. The coral reef provides calm, clear beaches for swimming and snorkeling, and many varieties of sea life. While snorkeling and diving are extremely popular, there is still plenty to do outside of these activities.

Other water activities include deep sea fishing, fly-fishing on the flats and mangroves, swimming with the dolphins, sail excursions, ocean kayaking and jet ski rental.
Land activities include a choice of canopy tours, riding horses, exploring lush tropical scenery, shopping for island crafts, eating at some of the best restaurants in Honduras, walking the beach and viewing the butterfly and floral gardens.

Roatan is not as "touristy" as many Caribbean islands and has a friendly, "laid back" atmosphere. Blue skies, clear turquoise water, and year round temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s make for an ideal setting for relaxing or visiting the many attractions such as Marble Hills Farms, the Mangrove Tunnel near Oak Ridge, Carambola Gardens, the Iguana Farm, the beautiful Tropical Butterfly Park, the Institute for Marine Sciences at Anthony's Key, and the Cameo Factory in Coxen Hole. You won't find four star high-rise hotels, yet, but you will find a new golf course, and charming little shopping centers. In the evenings there is a choice of wonderful and unique restaurants and bars with local entertainment. Even a movie "theater" with a sand floor serving home cooked Italian cuisine by candlelight.

Roatan and the other Bay Islands of Honduras captured my heart and inspired me to buy a newly built beautiful wood vacation home to return to often and relax in an atmosphere that still remains very small village like where everyone seems to know each other. A five minute walk from this lush hillside home to the beach will provide a range of activities for all ages and interests. A visitor can easily navigate around with the many services offered, elegant or local rustic. Or just spend quiet days on the deck of this beautiful home reading, enjoying the island breezes that rustle the trees as the sunset displays it's color over the sea from the great view of the Caribbean.
